Dharavi Bachao Andolan has criticized Adani Group
for renaming the Dharavi Redevelopment Project as Navbharat Mega Developers.
MUMBAI: Dharavi Bachao Andolan (DBA), the organization that represents the slum's residents, has criticized the Adani Group's decision to rename Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), the special purpose vehicle for redeveloping one of Asia's largest slums, to Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL).
In a statement, Adani Group explained the reasoning
behind the rebranding, stating that it was carried out in line with the
company's pledge to create a contemporary, welcoming, and energetic community.
"This shift reflects the company's new perspective and commitment to
building a more expansive and promising future for all those involved in or
benefited by the enormous and historic task of rehabilitating slums across the
country," the statement said.
Raju Korde, coordinator of DBA, responded to the
rebranding by stating that it is not a new name because Navbharat Mega
Developer Private Limited is an old Adani firm that was founded on August 23,
2023. He did, however, advise the slum dwellers to exercise caution.
"Dharavikars' address will change tomorrow; it will now be of salt pans or
dumping grounds for trash."
According to the Adani group statement, "the government's pivotal role and the core purpose of the project are not altered by the change in name." "The renaming initiative was also taken to prevent confusion with the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, which is the government's special planning authority that deals with the redevelopment of Dharavi."
